$55 for full cable channel access, plus an additional $20 in rental fees and taxes for the DVR.

“Most DVR boxes use more than half the energy an average refrigerator… That’s $2 billion each year…” (NPR, Natural Resources Defence Council, June 16, 2010) Seriously!?

That sucker’s a goner.

As far as the cable access goes… well, now that it’s summer, there’s really nothing we watch except The Daily Show and Colbert Report. These are available to watch for free online. We’ll miss watching the Tour de France, but we’ll be glad of the extra hour or two each morning that we’ll have to get work done! And, we’ll miss the ability to record or rewind things we do watch — love that!… But, man! Can we live with that kind of energy drain?!… oh, the literal and spiritual juxtaposition… that’s good.

Well, so far we have failed at killing the cable… you see, the Tour started, and it’s just so fun to watch! Also, we mentioned to our son that the cable would be going away, and he was NOT happy about it. Here’s one of those complicated life moments that I wish was more simple. Probably just making the decision to do it, and then following through is the key here.

The Tour ends this weekend. The DVR box shall be returned to the local cable company from whence it came Monday. That’s the plan anyway. Wish us luck!
